My Project

Now that I have completed my Genius Hour project, I'd like to provide you all with an idea of how it went! If my Genius Hour project was something more tangible such as building a birdhouse I would take pictures and show you all my finished project; however, with something like mindful meditation I cannot really do that! 😄 Meditation and my sense of happiness are much more internal things and so I will do my best to capture how I feel at the end of Genius Hour with my words.

I found that through meditation, I was able to gain more control of my emotions and how I was feeling. After meditating, I felt regulated and calm, but I was also able to assess myself during the day and take note of times when I was stressed or uneasy and use strategies that I learned from meditating to self-regulate. As the weeks went on, I began to feel more in control and calm throughout full days. While stress did not fully go away, I felt capable of managing it better through mindfulness and therefore I was less overwhelmed. From when I started this Genius Hour project to when I finished I noticed real differences in my stress levels and mood. I can confidently say that mindful meditation worked very well for me and that this Genius Hour project has been a resounding success!!

If you would like to partake in a mindful meditation Genius Hour project or just take up meditation yourself I made a google form that lets you track how you are feeling before and after meditating! You can use the link as many times as you like so that you can track your progress each and every time you meditate! You can also check the responses that others have filled out to see how mindful meditation is benefiting them as well! It would be really awesome to see more responses come in on the form because I am so pleased with mindful meditation and I want it to be able to help you all as well!

I believe that I can apply what I learned from my Genius Hour project into my future classrooms in many different ways! First off, after having completed my own Genius Hour, I feel much more comfortable in leading students through a Genius Hour project of their own. In addition, I believe that I can implement aspects of mindfulness meditation in my future classrooms as a way to teach students self-regulation skills and understanding of their emotions.

If you are interested I have also made a list of resources that I found very helpful to me on my journey below!!

Headspace: This is a fantastic guided meditation app and it is the one that I used most often during my Genius Hour journey! I highly recommend you check it out, especially since they have a free version!

Mindful.org: This site has so many cool articles and information about all kinds of different forms of mindfulness, including but not limited to meditation! There really is a wealth of knowledge on this site and it would be perfect for you to check out if you are interested in starting a mindfulness journey!

321 Relaxing - Meditation Relax Clips: This is a cool youtube channel that has lots of peaceful music and nature sound tracks that help you get in the zone to meditate!

The Honest Guys: This youtube channel has lots of guided and unguided meditation videos for you to follow along with! I really like how they have a variety of lengths for their videos so even if you only have 5 minutes, there is a guided meditation video for you!

I think that's everything from me on this Genius Hour project if you would like to get in touch with me or ask any questions please feel free to leave a comment anywhere on this site and I will get back to you!!

  1. Hey Marcello,

Meditation is such a unique construct that I haven't really explored before! I completely agree that it's difficult to create a final product for meditation but I think that your summary is very well done! I really liked your TedTalk and your Stop animation. It's not easy to create a meaningful piece but you did a great job at it!

Something that I would suggest for the future is to look at how you can include more meaningful images. The one's that you have are great; however, I encourage you to take pictures of the atmosphere when you mediate? Do you do it in your room, in daylight, in darkness? All of this may help a beginner understand how they themselves may begin to meditate.
